The Story Behind My Keepsake Necklace

I often talk about how jewellery can hold memories, but I thought I’d share a little piece of my own story with you. This is how my keepsake necklace came to be and why it means so much to me…

If you'd like to explore my Keepsake Collection, visit my online shop.

It all started with a loose diamond (my birthstone) bought from a local mine in Pretoria, South Africa on my first visit to meet Gerhard’s family and see his home country…

I’ll never forget sitting together, totally in love, and totally excited, at a table of a crepe restaurant just down the road from the mine, with the sun gleaming over the landscape and onto our skin... soaking up every part of it and feeling totally blessed as we waited to go in for our tour, having just devoured the most amazing biltong crepe. I remember that moment like it was yesterday. The tour was amazing, right up my street of course! And I was so happy to share that with Gerhard. As we were leaving, we found the most adorable little gemstone and jewellery store just outside the gates to the mine. I remember so many details about that little shop, and how we chose the diamond together. It feels like a really special memory to keep hold of. And I’m reminded of it daily when I wear my necklace ❤

Then on my 30th birthday Gerhard bought me some gold grain and a gold chain to make my own keepsake necklace… so I combined the gold and the diamond into the first version of my necklace, with just my initial.

Then along came the twins and of course I had to add them! So I now have a small B and a small S to keep them close.

The most special thing about my necklace is that it holds those key memories close. I’ve told the girls this story, and whenever they see my necklace they’re always telling me “Daddy’s the sparkly diamond” because that’s what the diamond has become to symbolise, and I love that!

I’m always amazed at how special and precious jewellery can be… in so many ways. It can tell so many stories and can continue to pass those stories on to further generations.

One day, the girls will inherit the necklace, split it between them and remember me wearing it. And it almost brings me to tears thinking how special that is ❤
